THE CROSSING

Drowning in a sea of gold, an appetite insatiable
What is left to conquer but the sea?
Forty ships provisioning to serve the order of the king
Lining up like soldiers on the quay

To the deep they shall sail
A thousand men on an ill-omened quest
Ever destined to fail
As they make for The Crossing

A hardened and sea-worthy crew shoved off in the stormy blue
Each condemned to tragic destiny
They tumbled on for seven days, the boards all straining at the waves
Pounding ran from rudder to the beak

Hour by hour they bail
A thousand men, in a futile attempt
To take hold of their sails
As they take to The Crossing

Night has fallen, things have worsened yet, water rising for the kill
The men all strain to keep their ships afloat, no more buckets to be filled
Not an idle hand on deck, the cold Atlantic fills the hold
Would any man live to tell the tale, as the deluge takes control?

It soon was clear, their fate was sealed, the ocean was their battlefield
The frantic men all coming to concede
Upon that sea the ships were tossed, til every single man was lost
A sacrifice made unto the king’s imperial greed
